Today’s Twists on Mashed Potatoes

The ingredient staples for this dish are usually the potatoes themselves, milk, salt, and pepper. However, several variations have evolved from the classic take and include using a variety of potatoes for one. Whether you use russets, red or gold yukons, sweet potatoes, or even purple sweet potatoes like we do for this recipe, each present a slightly different texture and taste! Different spices and herbs can also be used to further add a unique twist, and even the way you mash the potatoes! Some people prefer smooth, creamy, skinless mashed potatoes, and others prefer a chunky, skin-filled version. We certainly fall in the middle here, and are open to all varieties of mashed potato goodness!

A key ingredient to any recipe to ensure the best taste possible is of course, the quality of the ingredients. And when you prepare a seemingly simple recipe like mashed potatoes, the importance of fresh potatoes is even more imperative! When you are searching for where to buy fruits and vegetables online or fresh produce delivery service near me, Farmbox Direct is a go-to option to make sure all of the produce in your household is at the highest, farm fresh level of quality as possible. Mashed Variations

As we know, there are endless amounts of ways to prepare potatoes, and although we find that mashed potatoes are usually a fan favorite across households, the limits do not stop there! If you enjoy having your potatoes in a smooth, creamier consistency, some other variations include Duchess potatoes, Anna potatoes, and Macaire potatoes!

Duchess Potatoes, traditionally a French creation, are made up of mashed potatoes, along with egg yolk, butter, salt, pepper, and additional spices, and then molded into different shapes before being baked in the oven.

Anna Potatoes, another French twist, are very thin, layered potatoes which are then baked in the oven to a mashed perfection, while still keeping their sliced and round shape!

Macaire Potatoes on the other hand, are potato pancakes that keep the soft, mashed texture that we love!

These classic recipes can be used with different types of potatoes to give them more nutritional benefits. Use yams or sweet potatoes for example, to get the most nutritional punch for your spuds!

Nutritional Facts

Now let’s go over some purple sweet potato nutritional facts

    1. This starchy, root vegetable is filled with nutrients like Vitamins C and A, potassium, iron, and fiber! Just one serving (one cup) of this purple veggie contains 40% of your daily recommended dose of Vitamin C, 13.5% of your daily potassium, and 27g of your daily recommended carbohydrate intake. Not to mention they are rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins which are responsible for providing the deep, vibrant purple color of these potatoes!
    2. Purple sweet potatoes have a starch make-up that promotes healthy gut bacteria, which then supports a healthy gut and good digestion.
Certain bacteria found in this starchy vegetable like Bifidobacteria help to breakdown the complex carbs present in potatoes and legumes. This breakdown between beneficial bacteria and complex carbs makes for smooth digestion and a strong stomach lining!
    3. The flavonoids in purple yams may help to manage blood sugar levels, making them an ideal food for diabetics. On the glycemic index scale which ranges from 0-100, purple sweet potatoes sit on the low end with the score of 24. This means that the carbs are broken down at a slow rate which allows your body to avoid spiking in blood sugar levels, and instead remain at a more balanced, stable energy.
